I’m Doug Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health Resources, with “The Business of Health Care Report.”
Our mission is to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve. With more than 18,000 employees in the North Texas area, our community begins right here, within the Texas Health family.
I have often spoken on this program of how important it is for employers to provide wellness programs for their workers. Employer-sponsored wellness programs can range from discounts on fitness memberships to programs that provide employees financial incentives for taking an active role in bettering their overall health.
At Texas Health, we believe in practicing what we preach. In June, Texas Health’s wellness program was honored with the Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles award from the National Business Group on Health. And I couldn’t be more proud.
A key part of our wellness program is the health risk assessment. Employees receive a $100 award for completing the assessment to learn more about their health. Additional awards are given for getting a physical or lab panel. We also offer discounted, payroll-deducted memberships to Weight Watchers at Work, and we have contests to further educate our people about the importance of eating right and getting regular exercise. These are just a few examples of the wellness incentives we provide.
The healthier our employees, the better care we will provide to our patients and the community as a whole.
For our faith-based family of hospitals — Texas Health Presbyterian, Texas Health Harris Methodist and Texas Health Arlington Memorial — I’m Doug Hawthorne.
