I’m Doug Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health Resources, with “The Business of Health Care Report.”
A July consumer poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation indicates that half of Americans now express a favorable view of health care reform. Another July poll by Harris Interactive – HealthDay indicates that the more people know about the specific provisions of the health reform law, the more likely they are to have a favorable opinion of it. However, the Harris Interactive poll also indicates that people are still confused about what is actually in the health care reform legislation.
For example, contrary to widely held opinion, the legislation did not create a government-run health plan. It will not provide health insurance for undocumented immigrants paid for by taxpayers. It is scheduled to reduce the federal deficit by $143 billion over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
Texas Health has always encouraged consumers to ask questions of their physicians and educate themselves about matters relating to their health. We think it’s important for people to understand what impact health care reform will have on their access to care, so they can express an informed opinion to those who represent them in Washington and Austin.
