I’m Doug Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health Resources, with “The Business of Health Care Report.”
November is “Diabetes Month,” and Texas Health is joining with the American Diabetes Association to educate people about prevention and treatment. I'd like to share a few facts provided by the ADA.
Nearly 24 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. The death rate from diabetes has increased 45% since 1987, and the rate continues to climb. Diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined.
Direct medical costs of diabetes in the U.S. are about $116 billion annually, according to the ADA. Indirect costs of lost worker productivity, disability and premature mortality are estimated at $58 billion. The total diabetes-related costs in the U.S. could reach $218 billion per year.
Here's what you can do to help stop this killer disease. Get involved in the Stop Diabetes movement by sharing, acting, learning and giving. Visit StopDiabetes.com or call 1-800-DIABETES to learn how to share your own experiences through personal videos. Act now to take control of your health.
