Integrating THPG and Independent Physicians|

I’m Doug Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health Resources, with “The Business of Health Care Report.”
Texas Health Resources recently announced the acquisition of MedicalEdge, one of the largest physician practice groups in North Texas. The transaction is believed to be the second largest of its kind ever in the United States.
More than 420 physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners formerly with MedicalEdge are now employed by Texas Health Physician’s Group. Texas Health Physician’s Group is a fully-owned division of Texas Health Resources that employs physicians and physician extenders.
The acquisition of MedicalEdge represents a giant leap forward in Texas Health’s goal of becoming an integrated provider and coordinator of care. By aligning more closely with physicians, we believe we will be prepared for whatever changes result from national healthcare reform. Ultimately, this will benefit our patients.
Our employed physicians will work hand-in-hand with more than 5,000 independent physicians who practice on the medical staffs of Texas Health hospitals. More than 75 percent of the physicians who provide care in our hospitals are independent.
As Texas Health continues on its journey to transform the delivery of healthcare in North Texas, we understand the vital importance of engaging with physicians in order to deliver outstanding value to all our stakeholders. Whether employed or independent, physicians can find a model of engagement with our health system that best suits their practices and their patients.
For Texas Health Resources and its faith-based family of hospitals, Texas Health Presbyterian, Texas Health Harris Methodist, and Texas Health Arlington Memorial, I’m Doug Hawthorne.
