Setting Business Goals and Celebrating Successes|

I’m Doug Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health Resources, with “The Business of Health Care Report.”
Now is a good time for companies to assess progress toward the goals we set at the beginning of the year. Each year, The Wall Street Journal publishes various articles on setting and prioritizing goals. Some key points include:
- Goals must align with the organization’s mission and strategy.
- Goals must be measureable and have clear beginnings and end points.
- And, most certainly, they should be challenging but achievable.
Ongoing review and holding people accountable help us all stay focused throughout the year. It is also important to celebrate successes and encourage continuing progress.
I’m proud to use Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Alliance as an example of successful goal setting.
The hospital is about to celebrate its first anniversary. The leadership and staff spent many months in planning the hospital. They set some very aggressive goals, clearly communicating the goals to all players, and measured their progress all year.
One goal was to efficiently track and manage inventory and control our costs through the use of advanced RFID tracking technology. Twelve months into operation, not one piece of property is missing or unaccounted for. That has helped improve quality and patient safety, and control cost.
Congratulations, and Happy Birthday, Texas Health Alliance.
For our faith-based health system — Texas Health Presbyterian, Texas Health Harris Methodist and Texas Health Arlington Memorial — I’m Doug Hawthorne.
