Heart Walk - Thank You!|

I’m Doug Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health Resources, with “The Business of Health Care Report.”
I’m talking to you today in my role as the Board Chairman for the Dallas Division of the American Heart Association.
Heart disease remains our number one health threat. Over 80 million Americans are afflicted with some form of cardiovascular disease. One in three will die from heart disease every year. But 80 percent of heart disease is preventable.
The simple fact is we’re not taking care of our heart health. Risk factors for cardiovascular disease continue to rise in large part due to obesity and lack of physical activity. Unless we do something to reverse the trends — or better yet prevent them — we’re in trouble.
There is still hope and good things are happening. Case in point: on Sept. 7, thousands of employees from businesses across Dallas-Fort Worth and community advocates made a huge impact when they joined together and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight heart disease during the annual American Heart Association Heart Walks.
I want to thank the many individuals and families who gave of their time and resources to help make a difference in the fight against heart disease. To our honorary Heart Walk chairs — Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price and Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings — thank you for the great work you have done. Our fight continues and together we will make a difference.
For our faith-based health system — Texas Health Presbyterian, Texas Health Harris Methodist and Texas Health Arlington Memorial — I’m Doug Hawthorne.
