Straight Talk About Prostate Health

Are you a man who foregoes annual prostate screenings, believing that an absence of symptoms is an absence of problems? Once you know some of the effects of an enlarged prostate, you may want to change your ways.

Any men know that an enlarged prostate can result in difficulties with urination, but many do not know that neglecting prostate health can also cause sexual problems.

“A growing body of evidence suggests a correlation between prostate enlargement and sexual conditions, such as erectile dysfunction and ejaculatory dysfunction,” says Wade Lowry, M.D., urologist on the medical staff at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford. “Some men do not want to address these issues, but they should be aware that most treatments for an enlarged prostate are non-surgical and very safe.”

Minor surgical options are available for men diagnosed with prostate cancer. Newer treatments such as cryogenic therapy and advancements in prostate medications have reduced the side effects and need for more invasive responses to less aggressive cancers.

“A common misconception is that all prostate treatment is difficult,” says Lowry. “As a result, some men won’t consult their physicians about prostate problems, even though many cases respond well to medication.”

If you are over the age of 50, the American Urological Association suggests talking with your physician about an annual prostate exam and prostate-specific antigen test.
