Your Key to Fighting Breast Cancer

Thanks to the wide availability of mammogram technology, women today have more options than ever for detecting and defeating breast cancer in its earliest stages. Available at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Kaufman, mammography is the gold standard in breast imaging.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), annual mammograms — X-rays of the breast — are vital for every woman beginning at age 40. In efforts to promote awareness and early detection, the ACS further recommends baseline screenings for women at age 35.

“Mammograms are a virtually pain-free way to find possible breast cancers long before they could be found through breast self-exams,” explains Teresa Grimes, manager of Radiology for Texas Health Kaufman. “Women can easily contact us about scheduling mammograms after receiving referrals from their physicians.”

Women undergoing mammograms are encouraged to ask about their results. If further testing, such as a biopsy, is needed, then that can be scheduled as well. Regardless of the results, mammograms can greatly increase peace of mind for women.

“I urge all women who are celebrating their 35th birthday to consider the importance of having a baseline screening, and women age 40 and older should undergo annual mammograms,” Grimes says. “These screenings save lives.”
