Fighting Diabetes One Step at a TimeIn an effort to raise awareness about diabetes and the importance of preventive screenings, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Winnsboro will rally with the community to host its ninth annual Diabetes Walk-a-thon.
During the event, nurses and dietitians from Texas Health Winnsboro will offer blood sugar screenings, diabetes risk assessment quizzes and information regarding all aspects of diabetes care, such as the importance of a healthy diet and exercise.
“The Diabetes Walk-a-thon provides an opportunity for individuals in the community to learn about diabetes and how to properly manage the disease,” explains Vicki Johns, R.D., L.D., C.D.E., Diabetes and Nutrition Services manager and community health advocate at Texas Health Winnsboro. “Participants help raise money for the Diabetes Awareness Fund — administered through the Texas Health Winnsboro Foundation — which provides scholarships to individuals who don’t qualify for charity care or who are uninsured or underinsured.”
This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 24. It will last all day, and the tent will be set up in the parking lot of Bell’s Pharmacy.
At Texas Health Winnsboro, the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program, which is accredited by the American Diabetes Association, is designed to help patients integrate diabetes management into everyday life. Patients receive access to individual instruction, education classes, follow-up evaluation sessions and free community support groups through participation in the program.
