Supporting Your Diabetes HealthFrom managing insulin to finding an appropriate diet, the challenges of living with diabetes can be overwhelming and may leave you feeling frustrated; but you’re not alone.
Texas Health hospitals offer free Diabetes Support Groups to community members affected by the disease. Whether you’re living with diabetes or helping loved ones manage their symptoms, the Diabetes Support Group can provide the information and education you need.
“There’s so much more than medication and blood sugar levels when it comes to managing diabetes,” says Laurie McGuyer, clinical dietitian and diabetes educator at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville. “Exercise, diet, stress, sleep and even relaxation techniques all come into play. It’s a multifaceted disease, and a comprehensive approach is necessary to keep it under control.”
Support groups provide an informal, social gathering outlet for community members to gain knowledge and support, says McGuyer. Attendees are not only able to gain additional education from guest speakers and diabetes educators, but they can also share personal experiences and learn from the lifestyle modifications and successes of others coping with diabetes.
