Sports Drinks 101

Sports drinks, such as Gatorade and Powerade, are designed for people participating in continuous activity — like running or biking — for more than 60 minutes. At this point in a workout, your body needs to replenish electrolytes and carbohydrates to keep up energy.

However, sports drinks are only needed during and immediately after exercise, not as a drink throughout the day. For most “everyday exercisers,” water is the best source of hydration during a workout. Consume 5 to 10 ounces 10 minutes before exercise and every 15 to 20 minutes throughout your workout.
