Sports Drinks 101

Sports drinks, such as Gatorade and Powerade, are designed for people participating in continuous activity — like running or biking — for more than 60 minutes. At this point in a workout, your body needs to replenish electrolytes and carbohydrates to keep up energy.

However, sports drinks are only needed during and immediately after exercise, not as a drink throughout the day. For most “everyday exercisers,” water is the best source of hydration during a workout. Consume 5 to 10 ounces 10 minutes before exercise and every 15 to 20 minutes throughout your workout.

The Ben Hogan Sports Therapy Institute, located in Fort Worth and Keller, provides nutrition guidance for elite athletes as well as everyday exercisers. To schedule an appointment with a registered dietitian, call 817-250-7512. (Summer 2008)
