An Endless Cycle of Pain Pain medications may seem like the perfect remedy when your head starts to hurt. Too much, though, can actually make your headache return instead of going away, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Such headaches are called rebound or medication overuse headaches because they return after using medication to ease the pain. Rebound headaches often begin early in the morning as the result of medication wearing off.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the only way to eliminate rebound headaches entirely is to reduce or stop taking the pain medications causing them. You should note that after stopping the medication, your headaches may temporarily worsen. Work with your physician to determine the best plan of action for dealing with your pain.
