Texas Health Arlington Memorial now a Nationally Accredited Breast Center
11/25/2013

ARLINGTON, Texas — With the American Cancer Society estimating close to 15,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Texas this year, Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital continues to offer quality breast care and support to those currently fighting the disease. Because of this commitment to clinical excellence and patient-focused care, Texas Health Arlington Memorial recently earned designation as a nationally accredited breast center from the American College of Surgeons.

The college’s accreditation program for breast centers requires hospitals to demonstrate high standards in leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement. Only 30 facilities in Texas currently hold the prestigious designation.

“Providing this kind of comprehensive, patient-centered care is a key component in fighting breast cancer, which affects one in eight women,” said Dr. Kory Jones, a breast surgeon on the medical staff at Texas Health Arlington Memorial and medical director of the hospital’s breast cancer program. “As an accredited breast center, we want to be that catalyst for change by offering patients every significant advantage in their battle against this deadly disease.”

To earn accreditation, breast centers must commit to ensuring patients have access to:

  • Comprehensive care
  • A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
  • Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
  • Quality breast care close to home

Texas Health Arlington Memorial is the first accredited center in the city of Arlington. Before earning designation, each facility must undergo a rigorous evaluation process that includes an on-site performance review. After conducting Texas Health Arlington Memorial’s on-site review, the surveyor wrote that the hospital’s breast center “exemplifies the purpose of the (accreditation program) and gives an already mature program the template to organize their care…it is also a good example of a very efficient center without walls.”

“We’re proud of this recent designation, but the accolades don’t drive us to excel,” said Kirk King, Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital president. “Understanding the importance of a patient’s health and well-being when making decisions is common practice for our nurses and physicians on our medical staff. As long as we continue to do that, then we are doing what matters most to us and to our patients.”
