‘Green’ Practices Earn National Recognition for Texas Health Arlington Memorial

ARLINGTON, Texas —Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital has earned two national awards for programs that reduce its environmental footprint.

Practice Greenhealth, a national membership association devoted to environmentally responsible health care, recognized the hospital with the Partner for Change award and the Making Medicine Mercury-Free award at its annual conference for health care’s environmental leaders.

“Our green efforts go hand-in-hand with our mission to improve the health of the communities we serve,” said Kirk King, FACHE, the hospital’s president. “We are reinforcing our commitment to public health by reducing waste and hazardous chemicals and making a cleaner environment for future generations. I am so proud of our employees and their dedication to these efforts.”

The Partner for Change award recognizes health care institutions with outstanding programs for mercury elimination, waste reduction, and pollution prevention. Facilities must recycle 10 percent of their total waste to qualify.

The Making Medicine Mercury-Free award recognizes facilities that have virtually eliminated mercury from their campuses. Since the hospital launched its first recycling program in June 2008, recycling has increased by 56 tons and solid waste has decreased by almost 200 tons.

Paula Cantu, the hospital’s director of nutrition services, organizes donations of food waste compost to the University of Texas at Arlington for landscaping. As a result, waste pickup is less frequent and the hospital has reduced costs, said Edward Flores, the hospital’s director of environmental services.

“Our green initiatives not only contribute to a cleaner environment, but also help our facility become more cost-efficient,” Flores said. “We’re honored to be recognized for these programs.”
