Nurse Navigator Guides Patients Through Breast Cancer Care at Texas Health Arlington Memorial
05/18/2010

ARLINGTON, Texas — Shirley Harvey, R.N., B.S.N., OCN, wants breast cancer patients at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital to know they’re not alone.

As the hospital’s new breast cancer nurse navigator, Harvey lends a listening ear and a supporting shoulder to breast cancer patients. With more than 20 years of practice as a certified oncology nurse and personal experience caring for two family members with cancer, she knows the full gamut of emotions that can accompany the diagnosis.

“I help breast cancer patients sort through their feelings, letting them know it is okay to be sad or angry, or to ask ‘Why me?’” Harvey said.

Emotional support is only part of the picture. Harvey’s role acts as the hub of the care process, guiding patients along like a close friend who knows the system. She helps coordinate appointments, answers questions, arranges follow-up care, and more.

“When patients are diagnosed with breast cancer, they’re terrified,” said Dr. Kory Jones, medical director of the hospital’s breast cancer program. “Their minds tend to shut down momentarily. The nurse navigator role is an important link between the patient and the system that helps reduce anxiety during a very critical time and helps make sure nothing will be forgotten during the process.”

In addition to the new nurse navigator program, the Texas Health Arlington Memorial comprehensive breast center offers a multidisciplinary approach to patient care that includes the following services:

  • Digital mammography, with Saturday appointments available
  • Breast specific gamma imaging
  • Reconstructive surgery options, including skin-sparing mastectomy
  • Breast conservation surgery
  • Partial breast irradiation
  • Complementary medicine, such as aromatherapy
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Springwood for Women cancer support group
