Candlelight Service at Texas Health Stephenville Recognizes Parents Who've Lost Children|
STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Love doesn’t end with death. Families that have had a child to die understand that. With that understanding, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville will host a candlelight service on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at the Stephenville City Park Amphitheater.
The Faith Community Nurses at Texas Health Stephenville are supporting the Compassionate Friends worldwide candlelighting service. This candlelight service is for anyone who has lost a child.
“Christmas is so much about children,” said Mike Hannah, chaplain at Texas Health Stephenville. “Parents who've lost a child have these emotions closer to the surface around the holidays. We want to give them an opportunity to honor that grief and celebrate the memories they had with their child.”
The worldwide candlelighting allows grieving families to know that their children have not been and never will be forgotten, whether that child died years ago or yesterday. Parents are not the only ones affected by a child’s death. Health care workers at hospitals who witness the passing of a child also bear an emotional burden. All allied organizations, community groups, churches, and houses of worship, funeral homes, hospitals and local community groups are invited to participate.
“Our nurses were looking at ways to help our staff who are grieving,” said Hannah. “They looked at effective bereavement programs and felt that services such as the one put on by Compassionate Friends each year are very effective.”
Everyone is welcome and no prior registration is necessary. Participants are welcome to bring memorabilia of their loved ones and will be invited to light a candle on their behalf. If it rains or is below freezing, the service will be held in the sanctuary of Oakdale United Methodist Church on Overhill Street, across the street from the high school.
