Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital Donates Food Items to Area Pantries
08/19/2008

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital employees recently worked together to donate the monetary equivalent of more than 18,600 non-perishable food items to the Child Protective Services’ Rainbow Room, HOPE Clinic and various church pantries.

Hospital and community leaders gathered to mark the conclusion of the food drive. Hospital staff donated the equivalent of about 59 cans per employee, which is 31 percent more than the amount donated during the 2007 food drive. Proceeds will provide about 22,358 meals.

“The food drive is just one way that HMEC employees demonstrate their commitment to the communities in which they live and work,” said Christopher Leu, HMEC president. “I'm proud of how our hospital staff and volunteers pulled together to exceed our goal and go above and beyond what was expected.”

Hospital departments, volunteers and members of the community all contributed to make the food drive a success, said Lisa Estes, admissions director and chairwoman of the HMEC food drive.

Volunteers donated items for a bake sale and an online auction helped bring in donations. Penny collection jars in the cafeteria and gift shop showed that every contribution – no matter how small – helps, Estes said.

Hospital officials also set up donation boxes in the lobby for patients and the community to donate items and used radio announcements to promote the food drive. The efforts enabled the hospital to beat its 2008 goal by more than 2,600 items.

HMEC and its hospital system, Texas Health Resources, hold food drives during June because more families are in need of food assistance during summer months. Overall, Texas Health Resources collected more than 590,000 food items in the 2008 system-wide food drive.
