Medical Library Awarded National Grant for Community Disaster Management Resources

FORT WORTH, Texas — The National Library of Medicine has recognized the Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth medical library with a $30,000 grant and Disaster Information Outreach Award. The grant, which will be used to fund disaster training and resources for health professionals and first responders throughout Fort Worth, is one of three awarded nationwide each year.

The hospital’s medical library will partner with Texas Health Resources Emergency Management, the Texas Health Fort Worth safety department and MedStar Mobile Healthcare to help increase use of the National Library of Medicine databases and tools during disasters.

“Disaster information database training can increase health care providers’ skills and confidence during a large-scale disaster and result in highly competent patient care during a chaotic time,” said Scarlett J. Burchfield, information resources manager at Texas Health Fort Worth. “By forming these partnerships, the library will help bring quality, evidence-based information to the frontlines of disaster management and ensure that our responders know how to use these resources at the point of need.”

Texas Health Fort Worth employees participate in disaster-preparedness drills throughout the year to help train for large-scale community crisis events.
