HMNW Exceeds State, National Averages on Hospital Survey Measuring Patient Perspectives|
AZLE, Texas - Harris Methodist Northwest Hospital (HMNW) scored higher than state and national averages in every category measured by the first publicly reported, standardized survey measuring patient perspectives of hospital care.
Results of the government-sponsored survey were released today and are based on data collected from October 2006 through June 2007. The survey, entitled Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), was created by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. It is designed to provide consumers with information they can use to help make health care decisions.
"Improving quality and patient satisfaction is a team effort, and is the No. 1 priority at Harris Methodist Northwest Hospital," said HMNW President Winjie Tang Miao. "We are always raising the bar and striving to get better, ultimately to continue to be a health care leader in our community."
The HCAHPS survey is one of several tools consumers can use to make educated decisions about health care, Miao said.
"It is important to emphasize that quality data is a starting point; it should serve as a roadmap for consumers to ask questions of their physicians and their health care providers," Miao said.
Harris Methodist Northwest Hospital is one of 13 hospitals owned by Texas Health Resources (THR), the largest health care system in North Texas. On average, THR hospitals scored above national and state averages in every area surveyed.
The HCAHPS survey measures patients' points of view on several factors, including:
- Communication with doctors
- Communication with nurses
- Responsiveness of hospital staff
- Pain management
- Communication about medicines
- Cleanliness of hospital environment
- Quietness of hospital environment
- Discharge information
- Overall rating of hospital
- Willingness to recommend a hospital
Harris Methodist Northwest Hospital plans to use the survey results as a benchmark for improvement. In addition to HCAHPS, HMNW uses internal patient satisfaction surveys and other measurement tools to help identify best practices and opportunities for improvement.
