Harris Methodist Southwest Expands Endoscopy Suite to Grow Gastrointestinal Program
07/17/2008

FORT WORTH, Texas – Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital will undergo a $1.7 million expansion of its endoscopy suite, beginning in September, to accommodate a growing demand in the community for endoscopic procedures.

The 2,515 square-foot expansion and renovation project, scheduled for completion in December, will include a new endoscopy suite and renovations to existing suites. Endoscopy, a diagnostic procedure that allows doctors to examine the inside of the gastrointestinal tract and the pulmonary system, is commonly used to screen patients for lung cancer and for colon cancer — the second leading cancer killer in the U.S.

The expansion project is part of an overall plan to meet community needs for comprehensive gastrointestinal and colorectal services, said Allen Tseng, the hospital’s administrative director. A colorectal care program was introduced in June with the addition of colorectal surgeon Chad E. Lewis, M.D. More gastrointestinal physicians have joined the hospital’s medical staff to care for the rising volume of patients.

“The demand for gastrointestinal procedures has increased consistently over the past several years, and we expect that trend to continue,” Tseng said. “We’ve been actively recruiting doctors to expand this program.”

Technology in the suite will allow for two new minimally invasive procedures: endoscopic ultrasounds, which give doctors a detailed view of the gastrointestinal tract to detect hard-to-find tumors; and argon plasma coagulations, used to control bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, said Tammy Baergen, the hospital’s director of surgery.

The added space will also decrease wait times for routine colorectal cancer screenings. Wait time for a screening appointment will shorten from about three months to a few weeks, Baergen said.
