Texas Health Southwest Adds Meditation Garden
09/01/2009

FORT WORTH, Texas — During times of crisis, a quiet, natural space can provide a much-needed sanctuary for reflection and prayer. Scenes of nature can even promote stress relief, according to the June 2008 Journal of Environmental Psychology.

Texas Health Southwest Meditation Garden

To give patients, visitors and staff a calming retreat, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth constructed a meditation garden in its main courtyard. The 8,250-square-foot project, funded solely by donations, includes a labyrinth designed with engraved brick pavers, memorial plaques, Indian art, bubbling water fountains, benches and lighted paths.

“Being a provider of comprehensive care means treating an individual’s body, mind and spirit,” said Brett McClung, the hospital’s president. “Providing a peaceful space for our guests helps us helps us fulfill this mission.”

The main focal point of the garden, a labyrinth, forms a one-path design that symbolizes a meditative journey into the center of a person’s thoughts and back out again, said Tim Madison, the hospital’s chaplain. The design compels the traveler to retrace his or her steps during the journey back out.

“The labyrinth represents a journey toward self-discovery,” Madison said. “Often times, our patients or their families are struggling to deal with things that don’t make sense or seem fair. We hope this will be a place where people can find peace during a stressful time.”
