Texas Health Cleburne Nurse Named Hospital's First Patient Advocate|
CLEBURNE, Texas — Jackie Laws, R.N., is no stranger to helping families navigate the health care system. She’s been a registered nurse for 22 years, most recently in women’s services, and last year was named a Great 100 Nurse. She also volunteers as a faith community nurse in Cleburne and the surrounding areas.

Now Laws is stepping into a new role as Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne’s first patient advocate. The hospital has always had staff members ready to help guide patients and their families through their hospital experience, but the new role will enable members of the community to have one main point of contact.
“Anytime a family member is hospitalized it puts great stress on the family,” Laws said. “My role is to offer support and guidance to patients and their families. Whether it’s helping to explain a procedure or to facilitate communication with a physician on the medical staff or a nurse, I will be available to help. I’m excited to get to work closely with our patients and their families.”
A patient advocate assists patients and families with accessing hospital services, tries to resolve any concerns or complaints, and acts as a liaison between the patient and the hospital or medical staff. Patient Advocates are specially trained in complaint management, mediation, negotiation and active listening.
Individuals should contact Laws if they are unsure of whom to ask for help, if there are difficulties during a hospital stay or visit, or have questions or concerns about any aspect of care or service.
“Jackie is perfect in this role,” said Blake Kretz, FACHE, hospital president. “She is one of those people who you can tell cares about each person she encounters and is talented at explaining the medical reasons and working with individuals to improve their care. She’s a tremendous asset to the hospital and to the community.”
