Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne Among Nation’s Best in Three Quality Measures
09/28/2011

CLEBURNE, Texas — Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne has been named one of the nation’s top performers in three key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditation agency of health care organizations in the United States.

Texas Health Cleburne was recognized for evidence-based clinical processes that improve outcomes for patients with heart failure and pneumonia and for those undergoing surgery. Less than 15 percent of U.S. hospitals achieved the honor.

“This honor reflects our commitment to medical best practices that help ensure quality outcomes,” said Blake Kretz, FACHE, hospital president. “I’m proud of the work that our clinicians do every day to improve the lives of our patients.”

The Top Performers on Key Quality Measures program is designed as an incentive for better performance on accountability measures and to support organizations in their quest to do better, according to the commission.

“This honor shows what we can achieve when our clinicians work together as a team, with the focus of improving the health of our patients through quality care,” Kretz added.

To achieve the honor, Texas Health Cleburne met or exceeded a 95 percent performance target in all accountability measures for heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care, the commission said.

“We’re very proud that through evidence-based medicine, which are medical best practices, and a commitment to putting patients first, we’re continually improving the quality of care we provide,” said Dr. Joseph Prosser, Texas Health Cleburne’s chief quality officer. “This recognition is very exciting for everyone who has put so much effort into fulfilling our mission to improve the health of the people in the Cleburne community.”

Texas Health Cleburne will be recognized in The Joint Commission’s “Improving America’s Hospitals” annual report.

The new top performer program highlights hospitals’ performances on accountability measures, which are specific things hospitals and its clinicians can do to have the greatest positive impact on patient outcomes.

Examples of these evidence-based accountability measures are giving aspirin before and after arrival for heart attack patients, giving antibiotics before surgery, and providing a home management plan for children with asthma.

To be a top performer in pneumonia care, Texas Health Cleburne had to provide appropriate vaccinations, properly administer antibiotics, and perform blood cultures within a certain amount of time of patients’ arrival at the hospital. To achieve top performer for surgical care, the hospital had to provide appropriate preventative antibiotics to patients undergoing a surgical procedure — and discontinue the antibiotics within a certain timeframe. Clinicians also had to pay close attention to the medication needs of cardiac patients and take proper steps prevent blood clots. For heart failure patients, this included ensuring that medications to reduce the workload of weakened heart muscle were prescribed.

“We’re proud that the work we do every day is making a difference in people’s lives,” said Cynthia Plonien, chief nursing officer at Texas Health Cleburne. “It’s a labor of love for all our nurses and clinicians.”

In 2010, Texas Health Cleburne was recognized for high performance in a national quality incentive project by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The hospital was recognized for the treatment of patients suffering from heart failure, acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), and pneumonia — three of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. The hospital was also recognized for quality care of surgical patients.
