National Quality Improvement Initiative Honors Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne

CLEBURNE, Texas — Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne has been named a Top Performing Hospital for a third year in a row. The facility has been participating in a national quality improvement initiative, called QUEST®, which is run by Premier.

The goals of the initiative, called QUEST®, are to:

  • Save lives
  • Reduce costs
  • Improve delivery of care through the application of evidenced-based methods

To be named a Top Performing Hospital, facilities must meet each of the three goals.

Texas Health was the only health system in North Texas with facilities named to the 2011 Top Performers list. In addition to Texas Health Cleburne, Texas Health hospitals in Azle, Arlington, Hurst-Euless-Bedford and Southwest Fort Worth have been recognized as Top Performers for achievements in 2011.

“The employees and physicians at Texas Health Cleburne are dedicated to finding ways to improve the care we provide to each patient,” said Blake Kretz, FACHE, hospital president. “In health care it is important to continuously evaluate our processes to find ways to better care for our patients. It’s our employees and physicians on the medical staff that make that progress possible.”

For example, Texas Health hospitals implemented two procedures that helped improve care. First, nurses use a checklist to help identify patients with a history of certain conditions or who might have developed conditions that need special monitoring. Second, once those conditions have been identified the patient is then monitored closely with a concurrent review process whereby medical professionals in Texas Health’s quality department review each chart while the patient is in the hospital. Based on what they learn, patient care can be adjusted, if needed, to apply the latest evidence-based treatment protocols.

Those two processes have both been made possible because all of Texas Health’s wholly owned hospitals have implemented an electronic health record. Flagging the conditions at the start of the patient’s stay enables caregivers to fully utilize the electronic system for reminders and alerts.

“In addition to working internally to provide the best care we can to each patient, Texas Health also finds it helpful to compare our practices against our peers across the country in initiatives like this one,” said Dr. Mark Lester, interim chief quality officer for Texas Health Resources. “We also communicate throughout our health system best practices to provide high quality care as we seek to improve the health of the communities we serve.”

In 2011, 120 facilities across the country were named to the Top Performing list. A total of 278 hospitals participated in the initiative in 2011.

“The achievements made by QUEST members are remarkable as they continue to reveal what is possible in healthcare, Susan DeVore, Premier president and CEO said. “Texas Health Cleburne is a true standard setter for top quality care in America, as they support the health of people in their community.”
