Harris Methodist Walls Regional to Offer Senior Safety Tips at St. Mark Fall Festival|
CLEBURNE, Texas — One in three adults age 65 or older fall each year, with 20 to 30 percent suffering moderate to severe injuries that make it difficult to live independently and increase their chances of an early death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital will provide information on fall prevention from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the St. Mark Fall Festival. The event will be held at St. Mark United Methodist Church.
“Falls can happen anytime and anywhere,” said Marvin Cloud, trauma coordinator at Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital. “For many older adults a fall can be catastrophic. Older adults, and children of older adults, should exercise caution and take care to prevent unnecessary falls.”
At the festival, Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital will help individuals catalog their medications to reduce interactions, offer vision screenings to verify if people can see correctly thereby reducing the risk of falls, demonstrate exercises to strengthen core muscles to prevent falls, and provide details on how to reduce fall hazards around the house.
Falls may be prevented by taking simple steps. The CDC recommends that older adults:
- Exercise regularly;
- Ask a physician or pharmacist to review prescription and over-the-counter medications to reduce side effects and interactions;
- Have eyesight checked at least once a year;
- Improve lighting in the home; and
- Reduce home hazards that can lead to falls.
In a study of people age 72 or older, the average cost of a fall-related injury was $19,440, not including doctors’ services, according to the CDC. In 2000, the direct cost of fall injuries for people age 65 or older was more than $19 billion. That figure is expected to more than double by 2020, according to the CDC.
