Preventive Measures Can Help Minimize Sports-Related Injuries
08/24/2009

CLEBURNE, Texas — According to the National SAFE KIDS Campaign and the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 775,000 children and adolescents ages 14 and under are treated in hospital emergency rooms for sports-related injuries each year. As the new school year begins, so does the return of sports and other physical activities for school-aged kids.

“We see an increase in sports-related injuries when school resumes,” said Dr. Brad Harman, an orthopedic surgeon on the medical staff at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne. “Correct use of safety equipment and other preventive measures will help minimize these injuries.”

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that parents take the following steps to protect their children and avoid unnecessary injuries:

  • Always wear the right helmet for the activity to reduce the risk of head injury.
  • Stay hydrated. Dehydration can cause muscle cramps, dizziness and fatigue.
  • Check clothing for hazards. Drawstrings pose a strangulation hazard because they can get caught on playground equipment or other products.

Simple steps can be taken to prevent sports-related injuries. Parents should also consider the age, developmental status and skill level of their child prior to enrolling them or allowing them to participate in certain sports.
