Texas Health Cleburne Offers Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinic|
CLEBURNE, Texas — As the temperatures start to cool ever so slightly and children start selecting Halloween costumes, it also becomes time for everyone’s favorite fall activity — the annual flu shot.
Every year, up to 20 percent of U.S. residents get sick from the flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 200,000 people a year are hospitalized for the flu, including 20,000 children, and about 36,000 people die each year, the CDC said.
To help people protect against the flu, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne will host its third annual drive-thru flu shot clinic on Saturday, Oct. 9.
The clinic is designed so individuals don’t even have to leave their vehicles to get the flu shot. The shot costs $20 per person adult over the age of 18. Only cash will be accepted. The clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the hospital’s back parking lot.
“This is an easy way to get the family vaccinated while out running errands on a Saturday morning,” said Ronda Dillard, R.N., employee and occupational health nurse at Texas Health Cleburne. “Getting the flu shot is crucial to staying well along with practicing good hand hygiene techniques.”
The easiest ways to protect yourself is to cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze, clean your hands often, and remind children to practice healthy habits, according to the CDC.
Who doesn’t know the “Happy Birthday” song? Well, it turns out the tune isn’t just for when birthday cakes are brought out to blow out candles.
To ensure that hands are cleaned thoroughly, the CDC recommends washing hands — with soap and warm water — for 15 to 20 seconds, or about the same time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice.
In addition, the CDC offers these tips to reduce your risk of catching the flu:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Stay home when you are sick
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
- Clean your hands
- Practice other good health habits, such as getting plenty of sleep, exercising, managing stress, drinking plenty of fluids and eating nutritious food.
