Texas Health Kaufman Nurses Stayed at Hospital During Record Snowfall 02/18/2010
KAUFMAN, Texas — A group of about a dozen nurses at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Kaufman spent the night at the hospital during the recent snow storm for fear icy roads might keep them from getting to work the next day.
The winter storm dumped more than 10 inches of snow on most of North and East Texas.
“It’s a great reflection of the dedication these nurses have to their patients,” said Krista Baty, MHA, RN, chief nurse executive at Texas Health Kaufman. “Because of their commitment, we’re able to maintain the same high-level of care our patients are used to — even in severe weather situations like this.”
The winter storm dumped more than 10 inches of snow on most of North and East Texas, setting snowfall records for a 24-hour period. Roads throughout Kaufman County and surrounding areas were covered in an icy, snowy sludge that made driving slow and treacherous.
Baty didn’t spend the night at the hospital (she lives nearby), but she and other hospital staff spent the first part of their Friday morning shift helping stuck drivers get out of the hospital parking lot. Dinner on Feb. 11, when the storm hit, and the next day’s breakfast were provided to employees.
“In addition to those who spent the night at the hospital, dozens of employees braved icy roads to get here,” said Patsy Youngs, president of Texas Health Kaufman. “Providing a meal was the least we could do for these dedicated employees.”
