Texas Health Kaufman received the Quality Respiratory Recognition award from the American Association for Respiratory Care. The program recognizes respiratory programs that meet the high standards set by the association for treating asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, and other lung conditions.

“This is a great honor for our staff, but it’s really about our patients and people in the local community,” said Trisha Scarborough, manager of cardiopulmonary and rehabilitation services at Texas Health Kaufman. “This lets them know they can come here and get a high-level of care.”

The quality program was started in 2003 to help consumers identify hospitals that provide quality respiratory care. Hospitals earning the designation ensure patient safety by agreeing to adhere to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services, according to the association. About 15 percent of hospitals in the United States have applied for and received this award. This is the second consecutive year that Texas Health Kaufman has received the recognition.

“Meeting these requirements shows a level of care consistent with national standards and guidelines and reflects a commitment to quality care,” said Dr. Shashank Dengle, a cardiologist on the medical staff at Texas Health Kaufman and medical director of cardiopulmonary medicine. “We’re proud to provide effective care to patients with various medical needs, from asthma to complex medical conditions like heart failure and emphysema.”

In addition to chronic lung conditions seen in adult patients, respiratory therapists also care for premature infants and are key members of rapid response teams that handle medical emergencies at the hospital.

Scarborough credited the department’s success, in part, on the long tenure many of the respiratory technicians have with the hospital. Most have been with Texas Health Kaufman for at least five years.

To qualify for the recognition, Texas Health Kaufman provided documentation showing:

  • All respiratory therapists at the hospital are certified by the state to provide respiratory care or are credentialed as certified respiratory technicians or registered respiratory technicians.
  • Respiratory therapists are available 24 hours a day.
  • Other personnel qualified to perform specific respiratory procedures and the amount of supervision required for personnel to carry out specific procedures must be designated in writing.
  • A doctor of medicine or osteopathy is designated as medical director of respiratory care services.
