PLANO, Texas — Dr. Isador Lieberman, medical director of the Spine Tumor & Scoliosis Center at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, has received an award from a global health organization for his extensive medical missions work in Uganda.

Lieberman, a fellowship-trained orthopedic and spinal surgeon on the medical staff at the Texas Back Institute and Texas Health Plano, received the sixth annual Golden Apple Award from Health Volunteers Overseas, a non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality and availability of health care services in developing countries.

“I am honored to be the recipient of this award and more importantly honored to be working with so many dedicated health care volunteers,” Lieberman said. “My first trip to Uganda forever changed my life and my perspective. Each mission serves to realign my universe and remind me why I am a physician."

Lieberman also established and implemented the Uganda Spine Mission, a medical mission that brings much-needed spinal care to the people of Uganda. The mission also provides clinical training to nurses, residents and medical students in the area, with the goal of improving spine care in the region. For the last five years, Lieberman has raised the necessary funds, organized the mission, and led teams of volunteers to Mulago Hospital in Kampala.

“We at Texas Health Plano and the Texas Back Institute would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Lieberman for making a difference in the lives of so many, both here in Plano and abroad,” said Dr. Jeffrey Canose, president of Texas Health Plano. “His work has directly improved the health of many in Uganda, and the clinical training he has provided will have positive ripple effects for many years to come.”

Lieberman plans to return to Uganda this summer for his sixth annual spine mission.

“By highlighting the accomplishments of volunteers like Dr. Lieberman, we hope to raise awareness of global health issues and encourage others to work towards better health care around the world,” said Nancy Kelly, HVO’s executive director.

Lieberman has been recognized both nationally and internationally for his contributions to spinal surgery including treatment of scoliosis and spine tumors, as well as minimally invasive/endoscopic spinal surgery and treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. He came to Plano from the Cleveland Clinic Florida, where he served as chairman of the facility’s Spine Department.

Lieberman has designed and developed numerous spinal surgery instruments and implants, including an artificial disc replacement and the first available spine surgery robot. He currently has 17 issued and 9 pending U.S. patents. His research has appeared in more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, as well as in numerous books, chapters and journals.
