PLANO, Texas — For pharmacist Duane Deaver, the little things make all the difference.

A 26-year veteran of the Army Reserve, Deaver is no stranger to being mobilized in support of the country. He said he’s been particularly impressed by the camaraderie from his colleagues at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, so much so he nominated them for an award to recognize their efforts.
Texas Health Plano President Dr. Jeffrey Canose and Dr. Julia Janich, director of pharmacy, were honored with the Patriot Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The award recognizes employers that support employee participating in the National Guard and Reserve.
In addition, the pharmacy department was presented the Above and Beyond award, a national recognition of all the department has done to support armed services personnel. During Deaver’s two mobilizations, he found departmental support in care packages, family contact, and re-integrating back to his civilian pharmacist role.
“Texas Health Plano greatly values the work of our veterans, reservists and their families,” Canose said. “We start at new employee orientation and continue that recognition whenever we can. It’s a team coming together.”
In addition to mentioning the contributions of military personnel and their families during orientation, the hospital includes regular updates in email newsletters and other communications. Last year, the hospital started a Veteran’s Day celebration event, something that will now become an annual event, Canose said.
“The hospital offers a lot of support for soldiers and I felt it was proper to nominate them for the award,” Deaver said. “The attention they spend on helping ease the scheduling and financial burdens of serving makes a huge difference. It helps to have support.”
