PHP Receives Prestigious Texas Award for Performance Excellence
05/07/2008

PLANO, Texas — Presbyterian Hospital of Plano has been named a recipient of the 2008 Texas Award for Performance Excellence, the state's highest honor for quality and organizational performance.

Presbyterian Hospital of Plano (PHP) is the first health care facility in Collin County to receive this prestigious honor and the fourth in Texas. It also is the first hospital in parent company Texas Health Resources' 13-member hospital system to achieve this distinction.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for Presbyterian Hospital of Plano to have our dedicated team of employees, physicians and volunteers recognized for the exemplary work they do consistently every day," said Philip M. Wentworth, FACHE, PHP president. "Four years ago, we embarked on this journey, determined to raise our levels of patient care throughout the hospital from ‘excellent' to ‘extraordinary.' Receiving this highly esteemed award is a tribute to the vision and commitment of our entire team."

PHP joins two other 2008 award winners: Central Texas Workforce of Belton and St. David's Healthcare in Austin.

Patterned after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria and process, the Texas Award for Performance Excellence (T.A.P.E.) was established in 1994 as an annual recognition of Texas organizations that have achieved performance excellence and applied outstanding quality principles in their day-to-day operations.

The award is presented to manufacturers, service companies, education organizations, small businesses, health care organizations and public organizations that serve as role models for quality, customer satisfaction, and performance excellence in the state of Texas.

Presbyterian Hospital of Plano was selected after a rigorous evaluation by an independent board of examiners in seven areas: leadership; strategic planning; customer and market focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; human resource focus; process management; and results. The evaluation process included individual review, team consensus and an on-site visit by teams of examiners to clarify questions and verify information in the applications.

Quality Texas Foundation, a non-profit Texas corporation that administers the Texas award, has presented 34 recipients with the Texas Award for Performance Excellence since 1994.

"We are extremely proud of Presbyterian Hospital of Plano for having achieved the Texas Award for Performance Excellence, as it represents the diligent efforts of a large team of dedicated individuals who work together to orchestrate quality patient care every day," said Doug Hawthorne, FACHE, Texas Health Resources chief executive officer. "It also sets the bar for our other hospitals to emulate, with PHP serving as a role model and mentor."

The T.A.P.E. award follows two other recent distinctions for PHP. The hospital received the acclaimed Magnet designation for excellence in nursing from the American Nurses Credentialing Center last December, joining the ranks of only 4 percent of hospitals nationwide to be honored with the award.

In March, PHP received the Ivy Award, a national restaurant industry accolade given to a select group of restaurants, hotels and noncommercial food operators that exemplify the highest standards of excellence in food and service. The award, given by Restaurants and Institutions magazine, hails PHP's five-star dining program for patients, employees and guests.

PHP will be honored with other T.A.P.E. recipients at the 2008 Texas Award Ceremony on June 17 during the Texas Quest for Excellence Conference, scheduled for June 15 to June 18 at Horseshoe Bay Resort in Horseshoe Bay, Texas. The conference will feature the three T.A.P.E. recipients, as well as world-class Baldrige recipients from a variety of industries.
