A Personal Approach to Lymphedema Care A certified lymphedema specialist at Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital has her own personal experience with the condition, allowing her to offer patients a unique level of understanding and support.
Kelly Bailey, M.P.T., C.L.T., at Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital, is uniquely qualified to help patients with lymphedema — a life-long risk of fluid build-up due to removed lymph nodes or other conditions.
In addition to 135 hours of specialized training, she is a breast cancer survivor and is at risk for developing lymphedema in her right arm.
“I was always interested in lymphedema care, but after I had 17 lymph nodes removed, preventing and controlling the condition became part of my daily life,” says Bailey. “I don’t get manicures, I wear a compression sleeve when I fly, I rely on my left arm to take food out of the oven, and I wear gloves to protect against cuts.”
Personalized Care
Bailey’s personal experience enables her to lead a committed staff at the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center’s Lymphedema Clinic at Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital, helping patients manage their condition. Comprehensive care includes:
• Manual lymphatic drainage — a hands-on massage to stimulate lymph fluid movement by activating remaining lymph nodes
• Compression bandage wrapping to help prevent swelling from returning
• Education about skin hygiene to minimize the risk of lymphedema
• Decongestive exercises involving small muscle actions to help pump lymph nodes
