 What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford is designed to meet the needs of people with chronic lung disease and their families. Chronic lung disease can often cause a person to reduce daily activity, which can lead to a further decline in health. The primary objectives of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program are education and progressive exercise. With a physician's referral, the pulmonary rehabilitation team can establish a personalized program to meet the specific needs and goals of an individual in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program.
Education
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program offers education and progressive exercise sessions. Classes on proper use of medications, nutrition, coughing techniques, smoking cessation, disease management and energy conservation techniques are also offered.
Exercise
During the exercise portion of the program, a Registered Respiratory Therapist will monitor the participant's heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and level of shortness of breath (or dyspnea). Progress reports are also provided to the individual's physician on a regular basis.
What Can I Expect?
During the first two weeks of the program, the participant will meet with the pulmonary rehabilitation team in two-hour sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Here, an individual will learn about the various pulmonary diseases and undergo initial exercise testing to find the best, personalized exercise program. Thereafter, sessions range from one to two hours and are held three times per week.
Where Do I Go?
All pulmonary rehabilitation classes are held at the hospital's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center, Suite 206. The center provides oxygen for Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program participants as prescribed by physician.
Is This Program Covered By Insurance?
Medicare and most insurance companies will pay for the components of pulmonary rehabilitation. Coverage amount is dependent on the specific insurance company.
