What do I need to bring to my therapy session? If you have a prescription for therapy, be sure to bring it with you. You will also need your driver's license and insurance card. We ask that patients arrive 30 minutes early for their first appointment to allow for initial paperwork. This will help you not miss valuable evaluation time with your therapist.
How will my therapy schedule be structured? Therapy is typically scheduled two to three times per week at first, and sessions last from ½ hour to two hours, depending on your doctor's orders and individual needs. If you're not able to attend a scheduled appointment, please let us know at least 24 hours in advance. If you know your personal schedule, try to schedule your therapy visits as far out as possible to ensure that you have a better selection of appointment times.
How long will I need therapy services? Your therapist will consult with your physician to determine the duration of your therapy that will provide the best results.
What role can my family and/or caregivers play in my rehabilitation? Family members and caregivers are welcome to attend your therapy sessions. Therapists can instruct them on how to be effective "coaches" for continuing your therapy at home.
What should I wear for my therapy session? Try to wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being evaluated or rehabilitated. If you're coming to therapy for a knee or leg problem, you might also want to bring a pair of shorts with you. It may also be helpful to wear athletic shoes, if you have them. In some cases you may be asked to change into a hospital gown to make your evaluation easier.
Will rehabilitation be painful? While it is sometimes necessary to provoke the symptoms during your initial evaluation to help determine the source of your problem, a good deal of your therapy will be focused on relieving your pain. Many people have the misconception that physical and occupational therapy has to be painful to be effective, but this is simply untrue. Some techniques and exercises may be uncomfortable but should not be painful.
