Mammograms and Beyond While mammography remains the primary method for early detection of breast cancer, diagnostic challenges can occur due to the complexity of breast tissue. There are times when additional testing is necessary. Texas Health Arlington Memorial now offers Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI), a unique diagnostic tool especially beneficial for patients with dense breast tissue; indeterminate areas on mammography, ultrasound or MRI; lumps that can be felt, but not seen with mammography or ultrasound; breast augmentation; or scarring from previous surgeries.
Working on a cellular or metabolic level, BSGI helps differentiate cancer from other structures or benign tissue in the breast. During the procedure, a pharmaceutical tracing agent is injected and absorbed by all the cells in the body. Due to their increased rate of metabolic activity, cancerous cells in the breast absorb a greater amount of the tracing agent than normal, healthy cells, and generally appear as "bright spots" on the BSGI image.
"Sometimes it's difficult to see small lesions on mammograms, especially in women with dense breasts," said Dr. Kory Jones, medical director of the breast program. "Breast-specific gamma imaging looks at the physiology of the breast tissue instead of its architecture, so we can actually see the activity of abnormal cells."
BSGI is the ideal complement to mammography. Traditionally, patients with slightly suspicious areas on their mammograms have required follow-up mammograms at three or six month intervals to watch for changes. BSGI eliminates this wait time and can aide in diagnosis when a mammogram is inconclusive.
"Patients have less anxiety with breast-specific gamma imaging because they don't have to wait and wonder whether they have something cancerous that has now maybe grown," Jones said.
Pairing the information from both mammography and breast-specific gamma imaging gives doctors a strong diagnostic capability in determining your breast health. For more information about BSGI, call 817-960-6290
