DadFest Raises Awareness of Prostate Cancer
By Angela Clark
Take Dad and the family to the Dadfest 5K walk/run and festival Saturday, June 12, at Galatyn Park and Central Expressway in Richardson. The purpose of Dadfest is to raise funds for prostate cancer research and education and to educate the community about the importance of a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent prostate cancer and other diseases. A free prostate-cancer risk assessment will be offered from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Urology Research & Education Foundation booth.
Dadfest also provides an opportunity for the family to honor Dad by participating in a 5K run/walk together. Unique to this 5K is a father/child division. There is also a 50-yard dash for children 8 and under and a diaper dash for the pre-runner crowd. There are registration fees to participate in the run events, but the festival is free. To register online, visit dadfest.com or call 214-345-5030 for more information.
In the festival area the North Texas Ford Dealers will have their latest cars on display at the Ford Adventure Zone. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospitals Dallas and Plano will provide health screenings and activities at their booth. The Dallas Mavericks Cheerleaders and Mavs Maniacs will also be there. Home Depot will provide a children’s workshop and an opportunity for the children to build something for Dad. There will be a rock-climbing wall, bean-bag toss contest, free food and drink and much more.

Exercises include aerobic exercise such as treadmill walking or the elliptical cross-trainer, as well as muscle strengthening and stretching techniques specifically designed for oncology patients.
Did you know these great benefits of regular exercise?
Improves Cancer Survival
- Up to 50% in breast cancer
- Up to 50% in colon cancer
Improves Quality of Life
- Reduces stress and depression
- Improves physical and cognitive function
- Reduces chronic fatigue and side effects of treatment
Reduces Risk of Chronic Diseases
- High blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, obesity, lung disease and bone loss (osteoporosis)
Enhances Independence

Trained staff evaluates each person entering the program because participants may experience challenges with chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. Together the participant and staff design an individual exercise action plan. Staff members teach, supervise and medically monitor each participant.
Our FitSTEPS for Life® staff members encourage self-sufficiency by teaching participants how to safely use equipment independently. Exercise encourages and empowers cancer survivors to become physically active at diagnosis and during and after treatment, and to remain active throughout life.

Caring for the Whole Patient — Body, Mind and Spirit
By Joyce Bass, R.N.
Taking care of the patient with cancer is not limited to simply treating the disease but extends to nurturing the mind, the body and the soul. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas recently cared for a terminally ill Jewish patient. It was very important to her and her family that she celebrate a seder during Jewish Passover.
The family contacted the nurse manager to see whether the celebration could be done in the family waiting area. The hospital was pleased to accommodate the request and worked with the nursing staff to make sure that the patient could attend the feast in a bed-like chair.
Family members both young and old celebrated with the patient, and the staff at Texas Health Dallas felt privileged to be able to make this happen for the patient and her family. The patient passed away the next week and left with the staff at Texas Health Dallas wonderful memories of strength and love that will last a lifetime.
National Cancer Survivor’s Day
By Linda Vozzella, R.N.
Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas and Texas Oncology Physicians Associates have partnered to celebrate National Cancer Survivor's Day, which will be held on Sunday, June 6, 2010.
Texas Health Dallas welcomes all survivors and their families to join us in recognition of cancer survivorship — to celebrate life and demonstrate that life after cancer diagnosis can be meaningful and productive.
National Cancer Survivor's Day Celebration is held nationally and worldwide, with more than 11 million cancer survivors in the U.S. This year marks the 23rd annual celebration.
Who is a cancer survivor? As defined by National Cancer Survivor's Day Foundation, it refers to anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.
Texas Health Dallas is gearing up for this momentous occasion for one simple reason: to show support and appreciation for all cancer survivors in our community. Join us for food, fun, photos, guest speakers and goodies.
Sunday, June 6, 2010 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas - Fogelson Forum For more information, call 214-345-7394.

Texas Health Dallas to Offer Free Screening Mammograms to the Underprivileged
By Gwen Anderson
Texas Health Dallas is proud to introduce the SEARCH Program, funded in part by the Dallas County affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. SEARCH stands for Screening, Education, Assessment, Registered Nurse, Consultation, Help. SEARCH is designed to remove common barriers of cost, lack of opportunity, lack of knowledge, fear, language differences and lack of transportation — all listed as primary reasons that uninsured or underinsured women do not seek annual mammogram screenings.
The Women's Diagnostic and Breast Center at Texas Health Dallas will provide free mammogram screenings for uninsured and underinsured Dallas County residents. The SEARCH program also provides breast health education, high-risk assessment and round-trip DART transportation for SEARCH patients. For more information or a SEARCH application, please call 214-345-2589.
