Patient Testimonials

The latest advance in spine surgery has come to North Texas — the SpineAssist® surgical robot in the Scoliosis and Spine Tumor Center at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano.

"The SpineAssist® is a computer guided robotic arm," says Dr. Isador Lieberman, a spine surgeon and medical director of the center.

"The magic is the ability to take a preoperative CT scan and link it to an X-ray in the operating room so that the computer knows where everything is in three-dimensional space," Lieberman says.  "Before the surgery, I take that preoperative CT scan and I plan exactly where I want to put screws, put plates, cut the bone, decompress the nerves."

The Scoliosis and Spine Tumor Center at Texas Health Plano has the only SpineAssist® robot in North Texas.

"The robot facilitates the surgery," Lieberman continues. "It helps us be more precise and more efficient because of the preoperative plan and what we're doing.  So the surgeon is still doing the surgery, just more efficiently."

That can mean reduced pain and quicker recovery for patients like Leslie Steinberg. A support rod implanted in her back during a previous surgery had broken.

"It's really amazing because I had snapped that rod previously, right in half," says Steinberg. "I was so hunched over, and then he showed me these views and I have two rods going up both sides of the each side of the spine, and I'm just like so straight and so normal looking now in the X-rays.

"The first time I took my walk the next morning after the surgery, there's all these, you know, nurses and doctors saying, 'Wow, look at her go.  Look at her go.' I mean it was, it was, it was really very, very good, very good experience."
