Recognizing that sexual assault and physical abuse victims can often be re-traumatized by the medical exam and forensic evidence collection when they seek care, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano provides a quiet and soothing Serenity Suite for sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) and their patients.
Providing a safe, private and comforting exam environment by a SANE is the first step in aiding victims on their journey to recovery. The SANEs and medical staff at the Serenity Suite are committed to treating patients with respect and dignity, offering resources to help them regain control of their lives.
The spacious suite is a peaceful environment designed to care for the mind, body and spirit of those who have been assaulted. Compassionate medical care, expert forensic evidence collection and emotional support are all provided in the suite.
The Serenity Suite features four areas: patient receiving area, children's playroom, police interview area and clinical exam area. With soothing colors, comfortable furniture and a homelike feel to it, the Serenity Suite serves as a sanctuary for individuals in the midst of traumatic experiences.
A decade of specialized care
The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners program has been meeting the needs of sexual assault and physical abuse victims in Collin County since 2001. The program provides immediate, sensitive and comprehensive forensic evaluation and treatment by trained, professional nurse experts.
Collin County has 10 SANEs who are available day and night to care and advocate for victims, from infants to the elderly. The services of SANEs help preserve the victim's dignity, enhance medical evidence collection for better prosecution and provide testimony if needed.
The nurses see sexual assault and physical abuse victims from not only Collin County, but from all over North Texas. They work with a team that includes rape crisis centers, courts, police, nurses, doctors and hospitals.
