Lymphedema at Texas Health Fort WorthWhat is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is defined as the persistent swelling of a body part due to a blockage in the lymphatic flow when lymph node or vessels are damaged or abnormal. This most often occurs in an arm or leg, but can be anywhere on the body.

Causes of Lymphedema
The primary causes of Lymphedema include congenital malformations in the lymphatic system. Secondary causes include: trauma, surgery, infection, radiation, inflammation and venous insufficiency.

How can Physical Therapy help?
Specially trained physical therapists can help by providing Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which includes Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) along with compression therapy, exercise, and education. CDT stimulates the lymphatic drainage system in order to decrease swelling.

Treatment
Lymphedema is a serious condition and should be treated as quickly as possible. Though the swelling progresses slowly for most, if left untreated it can lead to other problems such as skin changes, skin breakdown or infection. It can also limit the motion and strength of the affected area. Treatment services include:

  • Evaluation
  • Manual lymph drainage
  • Multilayered compression therapy
  • Initial bandaging supplies
  • Patient education
  • Skin care
  • Gentle exercise
  • Home program development
  • Recommendation for permanent compression garment
