Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital Introduces New Lactation Consultant

CLEBURNE, Texas – Women who give birth at Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital (HMWR) will now have access to a certified lactation consultant to provide them personal assistance when taking the first steps toward successful breastfeeding. Susie Morrison, RNC, IBCLC, relishes her new role as lactation consultant, which she began in February.

“It’s very rewarding,” said Morrison. “I am excited to serve in a role where I can help mothers and their newborns develop a unique bond through breastfeeding.”

Morrison’s plans for expanding her role include introducing prenatal classes for new mothers by this time next year.

“I believe that if mothers knew what to expect beforehand, less would stop breastfeeding,” said Morrison. “Numerous studies, including ones from the American Academy of Pediatrics, have shown that breastfeeding have many health benefits for the baby, including fewer ear infections, higher IQs, and a lower risk of obesity.”

Prior to serving as a lactation consultant for HMWR, Morrison served as a nurse in the Women’s Services department of the hospital for 22 years in various areas, including Labor and Delivery, Post Partum & Nursery Care and earned both her certification in Inpatient Obstetrics and her certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

“We are excited to have Susie as a dedicated lactation consultant,” said Kathleen Harlow, RNC, BSN, MSN, manager of Women’s Services. “She provides our new mothers personal consultations to help them feel comfortable and confident with breastfeeding as they leave our facility.”
