Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville Hosts Mommy Mixers|
STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Motherhood — it’s challenging, rewarding and sometimes a little hectic. Unlike other full-time jobs though, it’s sometimes difficult to find someone right there in the trenches with you to share your successes and doubts.
To help new moms meet each other, swap stories and share photos, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville is hosting monthly Mommy Mixers. The mixers allow time for moms and babies to meet each other and mingle. Physicians on the medical staff and employees at Texas Health Stephenville also offer short presentations on health care topics related to growth and development, breastfeeding, and child safety.
“Our goal is for moms to get together and have time to socialize and learn from each other while gaining baby care knowledge and health tips,” said Jennifer McMeens, R.N., clinical educator at Texas Health Stephenville. “We want to provide new moms a place to meet with others with new babies. We’ll have experts on hand to address various developmental topics that might be weighing on their minds. This is about moms helping other moms.”
The events are held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month in the Outreach Education Building, located just north of the hospital at 411 North Belknap Street. The Mommy Mixer will be held on June 3. The Mommy Mixer is free, but registration is required. To register, call 1-877-THR-WELL (1-877-847-9355).
Hailey Austin, mother of 9-month-old Chaz, is similar to many moms in the group in that she likes to hear what others are going through.
“It’s a good way to meet other moms with little ones and share ideas on what has and hasn’t worked,” she said.

For those days in between Mommy Mixers, or for moms who can’t attend, Texas Health has created an online community for moms to swap stories. After all, in a poll of women age 18 to 65, Insite Field Research found that 78 percent of women look online for health care topics at least once a month.
Online at TexasHealth.org/Moms, the site offers information from infertility and pre-pregnancy resources to picking the right classes to prepare for your child’s arrival. And the site doesn’t stop there. Articles, videos, and Q&A are available to talk about how to avoid sports injuries and maintain healthy lifestyles for children of all ages. Interactive forums offer parents a chance to share their questions and insights directly with each other.
Ninety four percent of moms online say pregnancy triggered them to seek health information on the web and connect with others in similar situations, according to the Babycenter 2010 Social Mom Influencer Report.
In addition to a traditional website, Texas Health also offers three main social media gathering spots for moms:
