Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton is First in Denton County to Receive Primary Stroke Center Certification|
DENTON, Texas — Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton recently became the first hospital in Denton County to earn The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for certification as a Primary Stroke Center. The certification came after an on-site evaluation of the hospital by the Joint Commission.
“In stroke care, time is brain,” said Jean E. Range, M.S., R.N., C.P.H.Q., executive director, Disease-Specific Care Certification, The Joint Commission. “By achieving certification as a Primary Stroke Center, Texas Health Denton has proven that it has the ability to provide effective, timely care to stroke victims and can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients.”
Each year, about 795,000 people experience a recurrent stroke, the nation’s third leading cause of death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2009, stroke cost the United States an estimated $68.9 billion, including the cost of health care services, medications, and missed days of work, according to the CDC.
“We’re proud to achieve this distinction from The Joint Commission,” said Kathy Srokosz, R.N., interim chief nursing officer, Texas Health Denton. “With a heart-felt mission to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve, we are pleased to have The Joint Commission recognize our commitment to providing high-quality stroke care.”
The Joint Commission bases its Primary Stroke Center Certification on recommendations published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association. The Joint Commission launched the certification program in 2003. A list of programs certified by The Joint Commission is available at www.qualitycheck.org.
An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission is the oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in U.S. health care. Learn more about The Joint Commission at www.jointcommission.org.
