Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen Thanks High School Volunteers for Summer Service|
ALLEN, Texas — Gary Ge has spent 124 hours at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen this summer. Ge isn’t a patient though. He’s been volunteering his time in the Junior Volunteer program.
Ge, an Allen resident, is about to start his senior year at the Texas Academy of Math and Science. “I really like helping people,” Ge said. “It’s really rewarding to know patients appreciate the volunteers that help them out. I’ve had a blast.”
Ge worked in numerous areas during the summer, but primarily helped in outpatient surgery, the pharmacy and with visiting patients on the medical and surgical floors. Each day volunteers visit patients in the hospital and ask if they can help make their stay more comfortable.
This summer, 23 students volunteered through Texas Health Allen’s Junior Volunteer program. They contributed more than 1,000 hours of service to the hospital from June through early August, said Andrea Babin, director of volunteer services.
High school students age 16 and older can apply to be Junior Volunteers in February. Junior volunteers complete an application and interview process and are matched with their interests. Junior volunteers typically are interested in medical careers so the experience helps them prepare for later life.
“They are investing in the community,” Babin said. “I encourage all our high school volunteers to continue giving their time when they go off to college.”
The volunteers are placed in a variety of areas in the hospital, including the gift shop, outpatient surgery, and the Breast Center.
“The junior volunteers make a vital contribution to the hospital,” said Sheila McKinney, hospital president. “We are so pleased to have these students helping our patients and their families have the best experience possible as they face health challenges. We appreciate the hard work our junior volunteers did over the summer.”
