Web-Based Mental Health Assessments Now Offered by Texas Health Springwood Hospital|
BEDFORD, Texas — Texas Health Springwood Hospital recently began offering web-based mental health assessments, or “telemedicine,” via webcam as a supplement to the current mobile assessments. Face-to-face mobile assessments are currently available for Texas Health Resources hospitals in Arlington, Azle, Fort Worth, Burleson, Flower Mound, Hurst-Euless-Bedford, Southwest Fort Worth, Cleburne and Stephenville.
Web-based technology allows patients needing mental health assessments to receive rapid evaluation, as opposed to waiting for a clinician to arrive. This is especially vital for rural communities such as Cleburne and Stephenville. Patients and clinicians can see and talk to each other via the web through a secure connection provided by Texas Health. Once the assessment is complete, the mental health clinician will provide the emergency physician with recommendations on what, if any, treatment may be required.
“Using telemedicine means patients spend less time in the emergency department and quickly receive the care they need,” said Ramona Osburn, administrative director of Texas Health Springwood. “Mental health evaluations take time to arrange and complete when clinicians have to drive great distances to patients, over the coming months all Texas Health hospitals will have this service.”
Inpatient services for patients requiring admission are available at Texas Health Springwood in Bedford, the Seay Behavioral Health Center at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.
According to Osburn, at least half of the patients receiving assessments require inpatient treatment, an additional 30 percent require outpatient treatment.
