PHK Helps Brighten Christmas for Local Families|
KAUFMAN, Texas – Presbyterian Hospital of Kaufman employees have opened their hearts and their wallets this holiday season to provide food for local families and Christmas gifts for children.
"Two families identified through a local domestic violence shelter will receive large food baskets this Friday with more than enough food for Christmas dinner," said Pat Jackson, the hospital's community outreach representative. Jackson also adopted 35 Angels for the hospital from the Salvation Army's Angel Tree project.
“The response from employees has been overwhelming this holiday season,” Jackson said. “We donated food baskets at Thanksgiving, and our workers were so generous that we were able to bless the families with both a ham and turkey and enough food to take them well beyond the Thanksgiving dinner.
“We are constantly asking our employees to give, and they are constantly exceeding our expectations with their generosity.”
Hospital workers have donated cash, non-perishable food items and toys for the outreach projects. "Members of the hospital's diversity action team posted the Salvation Army Angels on a bulletin board in the cafeteria," said Jill Raymond, chair of the diversity action team and administrative assistant to hospital president Patsy Youngs.
“We decorated the bulletin board with blue paper and wrote 'Don't let these angels have a blue Christmas,'” Raymond said.
Jackson and members of the diversity action team also sold candy and soda to raise money for gifts in case any Angels were not taken, Raymond said. They raised $600 in three days with the candy and soda sales.
“There were only a couple of angels that didn't get taken, so Pat used the money to buy those gifts and extra gifts for other angels,” Raymond said.
All the angels' gifts were delivered to the Salvation Army within a week of receiving them. “Caring for our community encompasses so much more than what happens inside the walls of our hospital,” Jackson said. “Our mission is to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve, and one key way we do that is to reach out.”
