Better Breathers Pulmonary Support Group Hosted by Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne

CLEBURNE, Texas — Johnson County residents struggling with lung disorders such as chronic bronchitis, asthma and emphysema now have a powerful educational resource in the Better Breathers Club, sponsored by Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne.

The hospital is launching the free support group to help members of the community learn more about lung disorders, collectively referred to as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and how they can better cope with the conditions. Better Breathers will hold its initial meeting on Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. in the basement classroom at Texas Health Cleburne.

“Better Breathers is open for anyone with a lung disease and their family members,” said Jennie Presti, certified respiratory therapist at Texas Health Cleburne. “The group is about education on lung disorders, but it’s also a place where people can interact with others who are dealing with the same day-to-day struggles of breathing and coping with their lung diseases.”

The support group will meet once a quarter. Speakers will present on topics such as lung disorders, nutrition and sleep apnea. Attendees will have time to share with each other and family members on how they cope with COPD.

Better Breathers is an important component of Texas Health Cleburne’s pulmonary rehabilitation program. The program offers education and progressive exercise to help individuals improve their stamina and ability to carry out activities of daily living. Rehabilitation emphasizes programs such as smoking cessation and breathing techniques.

“Pulmonary rehabilitation is a great tool for patients and their families dealing with COPD. The program builds strength, endurance and knowledge about these disorders,” said Kevin Sullivan, Texas Health Cleburne cardiopulmonary services manager.

“Our message is that people with COPD can learn to live every day to the fullest through education and exercise.”
