Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen Named Certified Chest Pain Center|
ALLEN, Texas — Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen has been named an Accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
“I am so pleased at how the employees and managers in the emergency department and physicians on the medical staff worked closely together to earn this designation for our community,” said Sheila McKinney, hospital president. “When patients have chest pain they want to know that the closest hospital can care for them. We are continually evaluating our procedures to provide the best evidence-based care possible to our patients.”
Donna Bowker, R.N., a nursing supervisor in the Emergency Department, led a team of about 15 employees working alongside physicians Dr. Theresa Olfson, a physician on the medical staff and director of the Emergency Department, and Dr. Clyde Sullivan, a cardiologist on the medical staff. The team worked to improve processes and see chest pain patients more quickly. For example, now it takes an average of four minutes to get an EKG after coming into the Emergency Department.
About every 34 seconds someone in the United States suffers a heart attack, according to the American Heart Association. The group has identified the following signs of a heart attack:
If you suspect you or a loved one could be having a heart attack, call for emergency medical help immediately. Don't waste time trying to diagnose the symptoms or driving to the hospital. Often people affected aren't sure what's wrong and wait too long before getting help.
To receive the accreditation, Texas Health Allen demonstrated it works closely with local EMS personnel, can assess, diagnose and treat patients quickly, continually works to improve processes, and supports community programs.
“Remember, with heart attacks, time is muscle,” said Sullivan. “If you are experiencing symptoms that might be a heart attack it’s best to err on the side of caution and get to the hospital to be checked out. The earlier we treat chest pain the less damage is done to the heart.”
