‘Hometown Hero’ Gets Ride with Air Force Thunderbirds|
FORT WORTH, Texas — Christy Daae’s quick actions in a life-threatening situation involving two Fort Worth children earned her a “Hometown Hero” award from the United States Air Force Thunderbirds. For her heroic actions, Daee rode in an F-16 at the 2012 Fort Worth Alliance Air Show at Fort Worth Alliance Airport.
Daae, who has been an emergency nurse at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth for 14 years, was nominated for the honor by Fort Worth firefighters who witnessed her actions that day in August. She was at a neighborhood pool Aug. 6 with her children when she noticed a 3-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy, Xander Vento, in trouble. The boy had jumped in the pool to help the girl after she fell into the deep end. Daae immediately jumped into action, helping perform two-person CPR on the boy with another off-duty clinician, who also happened to be at the pool that day. Once paramedics and firefighters arrived, she helped start an IV and give oxygen to the girl.
"Christy’s quick thinking and willingness to get involved made all the difference for the little girl, and she did everything that could be done for Xander," said Dr. Terence McCarthy, an emergency physician on the medical staff at Texas Health Fort Worth. "She gave him the best chance of survival and revived him so he could get to the hospital where his family could be by his side."
Daae carried a photo of Vento during her ride and wore a green shirt to represent the boy's favorite color and the color of organ donation. Vento’s organ donation saved six lives.
"I’m honored to be selected for this Hometown Hero ride, but I just did what any mother and nurse would do in that situation," Daae said. "My thoughts and prayers remain with Xander’s family. He is the true hero. I accepted this ride in his honor and know he was with me."
The United States Air Force Hometown Hero program highlights extraordinary citizens who are doing their part in their communities, displaying the same pride, excellence and service that America’s airmen show every day.
