Give Yourself Gift of a Healthy Holiday Season|
FORT WORTH, Texas — The hustle and bustle of the holidays sometimes swallows up good intentions to eat healthy and exercise. Busy schedules, stress, and an abundance of tasty treats can be a recipe for diet disaster.
Rebecca Bass, a registered dietitian with Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Alliance, offers tips for giving yourself the gift of health and well-being this holiday season:
- Don’t skip meals to “save room” for later. We often eat faster and tend to overeat when hungry. Eat wholesome meals throughout the day to help manage weight and control portion sizes.
- Before making your plate, look over all the options to decide what’s worth eating and stick to that decision.
- No people pleasing. Only eat what you want, and don’t eat as an obligation to others. It’s OK to say no to seconds or even to your favorite dish. Your friends and family will ultimately respect you for it.
- Remember the 80/20 rule. If you adhere to your healthy habits 80 percent of the time, you can withstand to eat your favorite guilty pleasures 20 percent of the time. This way you can feel satisfied without the feeling of guilt or deprivation.
- When hosting, make sure to include low-calorie foods, such as fruit, vegetables and lean meats. Substitute low-fat sour cream, skim or 1 percent milk and low-fat cheese for full-fat versions in recipes (but stay away from fat-free cheese because it doesn’t melt well when cooking and baking). If you are a guest, bring along a low-calorie dish to share.
- Adjust your expectations. Stay flexible and don’t get discouraged if you have to skip your exercise routine. Sneak in exercise when you can – bundle up and take a walk after a meal to help avoid nibbling and to burn off some extra calories.
- Make a conscious effort to limit high-fat items. High-fat foods include fried foods, cream soups, cheese-filled casseroles, some pastries and baked goods. Enjoy your favorite holiday treats but take a small portion, eat slowly, and savor the taste of the wonderful foods of the season!
